My Cherished Friend

I'm sure God knew there would be times
We all need a word of cheer
Someone to praise a triumph
Or brush away a tear.

He must have known we would need to share
The happiness of little things
So that we can appreciate
The happiness that life brings.

I'm sure he knew our troubled hearts
Would sometimes ache with pain
At trials and tribulations
When goals we can't attain.

He knew we would need comfort
Of an understanding heart
To give us the strength and courage
To make a fresh, new start.

He knew we needed companionship
Unselfish, lasting and true
And so God answered the heart's greatest need
With a cherished friend like you.
